Certified GHG Verification Practitioner Course

Learn to plan, perform and conclude a risk-based verification of an organisational GHG inventory.

COURSE PURPOSE

Reliable GHG information depends on more than correct calculations. Verifiers must understand the reporting criteria, identify where material misstatements could arise, obtain sufficient appropriate evidence, exercise professional judgement and communicate a defensible conclusion. This applied course equips experienced GHG and assurance professionals to plan, perform and document a risk-based verification of an organisational GHG inventory.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Distinguish accounting criteria from verification standards, and distinguish verification, validation, audit and assurance. 
  • Evaluate whether a verification engagement can be accepted, considering criteria, scope, intended users, assurance level, materiality, competence and independence. 
  • Conduct strategic analysis and risk assessment, and translate the results into an evidence-gathering and sampling plan. 
  • Test GHG boundaries, controls, activity data, emission factors, methodologies, estimates and calculations across Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 categories. 
  • Evaluate findings, misstatements, uncertainty, corrections and the sufficiency and appropriateness of evidence. 
  • Prepare verification documentation that supports independent review and a defensible conclusion. 
  • Draft the core elements of an unmodified or modified verification statement. 
  • Explain when remote techniques are appropriate and how ISO 14064-3, ISSA 5000 and AA1000AS v3 relate in practice.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

The course follows the lifecycle of a GHG verification engagement – from engagement acceptance and planning through evidence gathering, evaluation of findings and the final verification conclusion. 

GHG Verification Fundamentals: Understand the role of the verifier, professional scepticism, verification principles and the distinction between GHG accounting, verification, validation, audit and assurance. 

Standards and Verification Frameworks: Understand how ISO 14064-3 applies to organisational GHG verification and its relationship with GHG accounting requirements, ISSA 5000, AA1000AS v3 and other relevant verification standards. 

Engagement Acceptance and Planning: Learn how to evaluate engagement scope, criteria, intended users, assurance level, materiality, independence and verifier competence. 

Materiality, Risk and Verification Strategy: Identify where material misstatements could arise and translate risk assessment into an appropriate evidence-gathering, sampling and verification plan. 

Testing the GHG Inventory: Apply verification techniques to organisational boundaries, controls, activity data, emission factors, estimates and calculations across Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 emissions. 

Evidence, Findings and Misstatements: Evaluate the sufficiency and appropriateness of evidence, identify and assess misstatements, review corrections and determine whether unresolved matters or scope limitations remain. 

Verification Conclusions and Reporting: Learn how professional judgement, evidence and materiality influence the verification conclusion, supporting documentation and verification statement. 

Applied Capstone Verification Case: Participants apply what they have learned to a realistic organisational GHG verification engagement, working through the engagement from planning and risk assessment to evidence evaluation and the final verification conclusion.

Throughout the course, participants are required to make and defend verification decisions rather than simply identify requirements in a standard.

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATE

  • Participants are assessed continuously throughout the course, based on overall participation, an end-to-end capstone verification case, and a final scenario-based assessment.
  • Participants who meet the course attendance requirements and successfully complete both assessed components will be awarded the CSRWorks Certified GHG Verification Practitioner Certificate.

PREREQUISITES

  • Completion of the CSRWorks Certified GHG Professional Training Course or equivalent knowledge and experience in organisational GHG accounting. 
  • Working knowledge of organisational and reporting boundaries, Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, emission factors, global warming potentials, base years and recalculation. 
  • At least six months of relevant GHG accounting, sustainability reporting, audit, assurance, data management or compliance experience is strongly recommended. 
  • Completion of the pre-course diagnostic and case familiarisation pack.
